It’s the day to worship Devi Mahalakshmi or Shree Vidya who is known as the light of the universe when the universe was forming. She is the hope , the light of knowledge the light of positivity in this dark dark universe. So to symbolize her knowledge we light lamps to indicate our Maha Laksh or great goal that’s guided by her light towards Para Bramhan or Para shiv .
